In September 2017, Mexico faced two devastating earthquakes: an 8.2 magnitude quake near Chiapas, followed by a 7.1 magnitude quake in
central Mexico just 12 days later. Puebla was one of the hardest hit states in the country. Hurricane Agatha – a Category 2 storm – then hit in May 2022, causing further damage to homes and schools inland.
